Ozempic is injection-only. There is no Ozempic in pill form.
Rybelsus is the oral version of semaglutide (the same active ingredient as Ozempic and Wegovy) — a once-daily tablet, registered for type 2 diabetes. It is registered with SAHPRA but not yet commercially launched in South Africa.
A higher-dose oral semaglutide for weight loss (an “oral Wegovy”) is emerging internationally and may reach South Africa in time.

How the tablet works

Rybelsus is taken once a day, not weekly. It must be swallowed on an empty stomach with a small sip of water, at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or other medicines — absorption is sensitive to timing. It is registered for type 2 diabetes; weight-loss use is off-label and uses different dosing to the injections. Crucially, Rybelsus is registered with SAHPRA but not yet commercially launched in South Africa — no local launch date has been announced. Check with your pharmacy for the latest.
